ITC102: Information Computer Concepts

FALL QUARTER 2014

12/9/14

FALL Quarter is OVER!!!

GRADING IS DONE!! NO late work will be allowed, and all assignments are closed, no matter what. You should be able to see whatCANVAS calculated for your grade point when you log in and look at your grades - it is in the upper right corner. I have graded all finals, and submitted the quarter's grades to the SCC system. You can get your grade there on December 16, 2014. I will not be able to handle queries until after Winter Quarter starts, and I will not renegotiate grades or be able to change anyone to a non-credit or incomplete. Please see my Class FAQS if you have general questions.

In the next few days, I will move the ITC102 website link to Past Classes. I will archive our assignments and grades on CANVAS, and I will archive our emails.

I am on break from Wednesday, December 10, until Monday, January 5, 2014. I have set my Out-of-Office email response, and I will be away from email until next Tuesday at the earliest.I will be checking email rarely and not available to visit campus until Monday, January 5, 2014.

If you have an urgent need, please contact the BITCA division office at 206-587-3830 or the Information Technologies office at 206-516-3150.

Have an excellent break!

12/7/14

NO CLASS TOMORROW - Monday, December 8, 2014. This is FINALS week and we do not have regularly scheduled classes. Remember that we DO have our Final Presentation on Tuesday!

REMINDER: ITC FINAL - Powerpoint file, upload on CANVAS tool, before NOON (11:59am), Tuesday, December 9, 60 points. There will be NO late finals accepted for any reason.

  • Classroom Final Presentations will be held during finals hours: Room #3168, 8:00am, Tuesday, December 9.
  • Bring your Final Presentation on a USB Flash Drive, just in case the school server or Internet is down.
  • Anyone who does NOT attend on December 9 will lose 10 points, as will those who do attend but who decline to present for the class.
  • IF you choose to not use PowerPoint, make sure that whatever you DO use allows similar formatting, transitions and animations, AND that I can open the file without the native presentation program.
  • HOT TIP: It's best to upload your Final Project early - even at the end of the full first draft, so if anything gets in your way before the due date, you have something up for me to grade.

As of right now, all grading is caught up. The only thing left is the LinkedIn extra credit, the Final Project, and the Participation points. IF you did the LinkedIn, you need to LET ME KNOW in Canvas - I might not remember accepting your invitation.

It is YOUR job to let me know by Friday, December 4 if anything is of concern regarding your grades. Remember that if you got 0's, this is because CANVAS closed before you submitted your assignment and/or quiz. If you have been docked participation points, this is because you had unexcused absences, were late a lot, and/or were generall absent a lot, even with excuses.

Class Layout

  • 100% Face-to-face class with hybrid information elements.
  • Mondays-Wednesdays in Room BE3168 from 9:00-9:50am. Wednesdays will sometimes be Lab/Demo/Guest days and any other locations will be announced the day before.

Here are our objectives:

  • Identify the major hardware components of a computer.
  • Recognize terms and abbreviations commonly used in the IT field.
  • Identify categories of software applications and their typical use in the business and IT field.
  • Use printed and electronic resources and the internet to research topics relevant to the IT field.
  • List the basic functions of an operating system.
  • Understand and discuss issues and trends in the IT field.
  • Communicate effectively orally and in writing.
  • Recognize and appreciate the diversity both in the classroom and the IT field and community.
  • Practice efficient communications and interactions with each other and supervision (instructor).

At this point, we'll be primarily a quiz and short assignment/task-based class, although good attendance/participation is critical and will be considered as part of your grade.

In most cases I'll chat and demo stuff in class, and set up assignment goals.

I'll make sure we all have the basics and are on the same page as we go. I will also will spend a little time in setting up each assignment, with

  • The objectives,
  • Tips and tricks
  • How the assignment fits in the real world, and
  • How to approach assignments and projects, and
  • Extolling the virtues of my favorite beverage - mochas!
