Freehostia Web Space - Set Up

In this class, your work will need to be uploaded to a webhost server space. While SCCC provides the free Edison server space, there are enough sign-in, space, and other issues that make is wise for us to start with our own free server space.

I have tried Freehostia and it's easy, seems reliable, and you can keep work there after the quarter is over and when you are no longer in school.

Getting Started

During the first week of class, get yourself signed up ASAP. Here's how:

  • Go to Freehostia
  • Find "Free Hosting (No Ads, No Hidden Fees) - Sign Up Now
  • Fill out the Freehostia SignUp requested information
  • Read the following page
  • Check the email you gave for a welcome message. May take a few minutes or longer, depending on time of day or night.
    • You will be assigned a login based on part of your name
    • You will be given a temp password
  • Go to the wep panel link you will be given in the email, and login
  • Go immediately to the My Account tab and choose "Change Login Credentials" to change your password.
    • NOTE: This does not change your FTP password.
    • You need to go to your control panel and choose the FTP manager to change the password there

Once you finish signing up, you will receive one or more emails from Freehostia about your account.

  • KEEP these
  • You will be told where to find your web page
  • Memorize the web panel login and password you are given until you change the password
  • Note: You cannout change your username

For instance, the one I set up is at http://lbothe01.freehostia.com

Once everyone is on Freehostia, we'll explore it in class and learn how to FTP - move your web site files to it.

Tips and Issues

FTP Video: FTP (file transfer protocol) basics
FTP Tip: If you are doing everything right and it's still not connecting:

  • Make sure to set your Internet Explorer so that it is not in passive mode: Tools/Internet Options/Advanced, scroll down and uncheck "Use Passive FTP"
  • Make sure your FTP program is also set to active transfer, and any timeout default is updated to 120 seconds. Example for Filezilla: in Edit/Settings, and make sure that the Connection section's "Timeout" is changed to 120. In File/Site manager, make sure the Transfer Setting's "Transfer Mode" option is set to "Active".

Freehostia Tips:

  • Freehostia login/passwords for different areas:
    • Your Freehostia login and password are exactly the same when you first opened Freehostia. However, if you changed your login name and/or password, this does NOT affect the default login and password for your FTP Manager permissions, You have to set those separately.
    • When logged into Freehostia, enter your FTP Manager. You already have a precreated FTP account near the bottom. Edit it, and change the password to the same one you changed your main Freehostia password to.
  • Freehostia's own FTP Video: http://www.my-best-domain.com/tutorials/how-to-upload-files-using-ftp-connection/
